Getting access to a lawyer should not be restricted because of economic situations.
To help bring legal services to a wider range of people who have traditionally been unable to afford an attorney, we have developed a sliding payment scale for hourly rates based on total household income and number of persons in the family.
If your total family income is below the figures in the minimum rate column, you most likely would qualify for Pro Bono (free) legal services through Indiana Legal Services or District 10 Pro Bono Project.
The sliding scale is based on monthly gross income:
Take the number of dependents you claim on your taxes, find your total household[1] monthly gross income range, and at the bottom of each monthly income column you will find the hourly rate[2].
Example 1: Family of 3, total household monthly gross income of $3,521 = $90 per hour.
Example 2: Family of 3, total household monthly gross income of $4,527 = $160 per hour.
Some legal needs can be accomplished at a single flat rate[2] for the entire scope of the service. Having a flat rate can make budgeting and planning easier on a family. These types of arrangements assume uncontested situations, and all parties agree to all aspects of the situation.

There may be times when the legal issue you are facing may not need an attorney for the entire life of the case. There may be a client who feels they can argue their own position but are unfamiliar with the forms or law of the case to form an effective argument.
Unbundled legal services allow for a cost-effective means for clients to hire a lawyer to perform specific aspects or portions of the case or represent the client in a limited manner. This is a cost-effective solution by only paying for the specific help you need.
Some areas where a client may hire a lawyer to perform specific tasks may include:
While unbundled services are not right for all legal needs, the opportunity exists where a client has the potential for a cost-effective solution which allows them to obtain the legal advice and services they need while the client undertakes much of the work.
Some areas where this type of service may be cost effective are:
It is important to note that some cases or portions of a case should not be undertaken alone or secured through unbundled services. A consultation with a lawyer will bring these areas to light, and decisions can be made. Even a case that appears simple on the surface may hold complex legal factors which must be navigated by a professional.

[1] Total household income is calculated by listing all income from all adults that live in the house. This includes spouses, domestic partners, and other living arrangements where both persons share in expenses.
[2] Rates do not include fees like court costs, 3rd party fees, travel, copying, etc. These are the responsibility of the client and are billed as incurred.
